TORONTO -- Midway through his first at-bat Sunday, Blue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson was hopping around in pain after fouling a ball off his right knee. From there, he was all smiles.Donaldson had his first career three-homer game, Troy Tulowitzki also went deep and the Blue Jays beat the Twins 9-6 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.Donaldson hit a solo homer off Kyle Gibson in the second, then delivered a go-ahead, two-run blast off Pat Light (0-1) in the seventh. Its one of those things, as a baseball player, you want to happen one day, Donaldson said. You dont know if its ever going to happen, its kind of a rare thing. I was happy to do it.Dozens of fans tossed hats onto the field to celebrate the home run hat trick after Donaldson, the AL MVP in 2015, hit a solo shot off Alex Wimmers in the eighth. Groundskeepers and even the Blue Jays mascot helped clear the hats away. Donaldson came out for a curtain call as the crowd of 47,444 roared their approval.Ive never had a curtain call before so that was nice, Donaldson said. I tried to enjoy it for a second. (Edwin Encarnacion) was on deck after I hit the third one and he had a huge smile on his face. That kind of brought it into reality a little bit there. Donaldsons fourth multi-homer game this season and the 10th of his career also marked the 17th three-homer game in the majors this season. It doesnt get any better than that, manager John Gibbons said. Jordan Outlet Store Near Me .Isaiah Thomas scored 23 points, Avery Bradley had 22 and the Celtics beat the Nets 111-92 on Wednesday night.Al Horford added 17 points for the Celtics in their third straight victory. Jae Crowder had 15.Boston improved to 5-1 when Horford is in the lineup.Al can score the ball, Bradley said. But its all the little things that he does and how he gets the ball moving, its so contagious. During the timeouts hes telling guys, `We need to move the ball. Hes a leader, speaks up and he really helps our team with that because sometimes the ball sticks and for Al to step up and say something and us moving the ball and it start with him, that means a lot.Sean Kilpatrick scored 23 points for the Nets, who have lost five in a row. Trevor Booker had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Bojan Bogdanovic added 14 points.Boston raced to an 11-2 lead and was ahead 30-16 after one quarter, but the Nets answered with a 21-6 run and 12 points from Bogdanovic in the second quarter. The Nets came all the way back to tie it at 60 in the third, but the Celtics then went on a 19-6 run to regain control. For the most part, I feel like we were sharing the ball tonight and getting open shots for our teammates and thats how we pulled away in the first quarter and thats how we pulled away at the end of the game, Bradley said.Third-quarter struggles have become a theme for the Nets thus far.I dont know if our mindset collectively is right, center Brook Lopez said. I mean, I guess its not. We just need to find a way to all be on the same page and come out the way weve been coming out most games, and again just sustaining that effort and energy. Thats the bottom line.Kilpatrick scored 13 points in the fourth, but it wasnt enough for Brooklyn.TIP-INSCeltics: Guard Marcus Smart has made an effort to add the floater to his game. Hes worked on it quite a bit, coach Brad Stevens said. It was a major focus going into his second year and he got better at it and then hes continued that focus now going into his third year. SAN DIEGO -- Cincinnati Reds right-hander Homer Bailey has waited a long time for Sundays rubber match of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.Rehab is not easy. I wouldnt wish it on anyone, Bailey said recently.Sunday will be Baileys third start since August 2014. During the past 23 months, he has had two rounds of surgery on his right elbow, including Tommy John reconstruction surgery on May 8, 2015. He earlier had surgery on Sept. 15, 2014, to repair a torn flexor tendon. We are certainly happy to see Homer returning, Reds manager Bryan Price said. Hes a quality, veteran presence who is going to add stability to a young rotation.Bailey opened the year on the 60-day disabled list. After two rehab appearances in April, he was again shut down and didnt resume pitching until June 27 when he made the first of six straight rehab starts for Triple-A Louisville (1-2, 5.75 ERA).He was activated from the 60-day disabled list Friday.Bailey will be matched against Paul Clemens on Sunday. Clemens was claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Miami Marlins on June 28.He has since made five appearances for the Padres, including one spot start at St. Louis in the second game of a doubleheader on July 20. He allowed three runs, four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings.Clemens was moved into the rotation Friday when the Padres traded starting pitchers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea to the Marlins.I like his stuff, Padres manager Andy Green said recently of Clemens, who spent most of this season wwith the Marlins Triple-A New Orleans affiliate. Yeezy 350 V3 For Sale. I like his curve. I think it plays at the major league level. He just needs to find some consistency and gain some confidence. Sometimes, all a player or a pitcher needs is a change of scenery. That might be the case with Paul.Clemens is a 29-year-old right-hander who was originally a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 2008 draft. He is 6 feet 3 and 215 pounds. This is a great opportunity for Paul and other members of the rotation, Green said.Meanwhile, the Padres were flying outfielder Jabari Blash in from Triple-A El Paso (the Chihuahuas were actually in Las Vegas) to take Kemps place on a depleted roster. Even before Kemp was traded to Atlanta during Saturday nights game, the Padres were down two position players.Because of the inexperienced rotation, the Padres are carrying an eight-man bullpen to cover the extra innings created by shorter outing from the starters. And with the loss of Kemp and the unavailability of outfielder Alex Dickerson (right hip contusion) for a few days, the Padres were down to two healthy reserves. They were forced to start first baseman Wil Myers in right and infielder Alexi Amarista in left. Blash is scheduled to start in right field on Sunday afternoon against Bailey.Naturally, Im excited, Bailey said. Its not like another start every fifth day. This is the start of another stage of my career. ' ' '

    • Each week of the NFL campaign we will sift through the deeper options at each position with an eye on identifying streaming fantasy commodities with valuable matchups to consider. Darnell Savage Jr. Super Bowl Jersey .Do you need replacement options for this first heavy bye week in fantasy football competition? We have some choice names to consider for those seeking widely available options at each position.QuarterbackBrian Hoyer, Chicago BearsIf you are forced to look deep into the waiver wire for a quarterback, you could do much worse than taking a flier on Brian Hoyer. Since replacing an injured Jay Cutler as the Chicago Bears starting quarterback, Hoyer has posted back-to-back games of over 300 yards passing and passed for two touchdowns in both games. His Bears draw the Indianapolis Colts, who have permitted the sixth-highest Total QBR allowed so far this early season. Such a poor performance is driven by the Colts propensity to surrender high totals of passing yardage (277 per game) and lack of forced turnovers (one interception). Look for Hoyer to continue his streak of impressive performances. --K.D.Paxton Lynch, Denver BroncosWhile our projection for Lynch this week is reasonably conservative for his first career start, there are some impressive upside ingredients we might want to consider when streaming in deeper fantasy formats. For starters, the matchup metrics are inviting, as the Falcons have allowed the most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season and have pressured opposing passers on just 19.8 percent of dropbacks, fifth lowest in the NFL. Its also encouraging to consider Lynch wasnt limited to a conservative checkdown agenda in Week 4, as his average target traveled 12.46 yards in the air on his 24 attempts in Tampa last Sunday -- the highest rate of any quarterback in the league for the week. With two top wideout weapons and an offensive line that saw him pressured on just 16 percent of his dropbacks last week, Lynch is an intriguing option in his first start. --J.M.Running backWendell Smallwood, Philadelphia EaglesThough Ryan Mathews will likely return to the Eagles backfield on Sunday, Smallwoods performance in Week 3 was strong enough to earn him some touches in the Eagles upcoming game against the Detroit Lions. While Mathews was productive from a fantasy standpoint during the first two weeks, that production was driven by scoring touchdowns, not by gaining large amounts of yardage. In fact, Mathews didnt achieve a yards per carry of at least 4 yards in any of his three starts. Smallwood, however, hit that metric by gaining 79 yards on 17 carries against the Pittsburgh Steelers. As the Lions allow the third highest yards per carry in the league, dont be surprised to see Smallwood get the bulk of the work if Mathews doesnt establish himself early in the rushing attack. --K.D.James White, New England PatriotsWith the Patriots scaled-down passing game accommodating rookie Jacoby Brissett over the past two weeks and the teams clear agenda to feed early-down workhorse LeGarrette Blount to start the season, White has been somewhat of an afterthought. Even with this unfavorable setup, White is on pace for 52 receptions and should see an uptick in usage with Tom Brady returning to the field. Without much fanfare White ranked second in the NFL last season among backs in fantasy points per route run in PPR leagues with a rich rate of 0.538 fantasy points per route. Only the Bucs Charles Sims enjoyed a higher efficiency rate. With the potential for more snap and route exposure on an offense that should increase the overall passing volume, White is a widely available flex option to consider for those facing injuries and bye issues this week. --J.M.Wide receiverChris Hogan, New England PatriotsAs Jim and I compared notes, I completely forgot Robert Woods of the Buffalo Bills because I added him immediately last week in most of my leagues after the IR move of Sammy Watkins was announced. As such, I wholeheartedly endorse his recommendation. If you need to go even deeper into the waiver wire, look at Hogan. With Brady returning to the New England Patriots, too many people are predicting the return to form for Rob Gronkowski. I dont expect that to happen. Instead, look for the Patriots to feature their smaller receivers -- Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Hogan. There probably isnt a defensive backfield in the league that can defend that speed and if there is, it certainly doesnt belong to the Cleveland Browns. Expect for Brady to throw for 350 or more yards, which gives Hogan a decent chance at being useful this week. --K.D.Robert Woods, Buffalo BillsThis play is far more about opportunity than talent or playmaking pedigree, as Woods has claimed a rich 29 percent target share of the Bills passing offense over the past two games with Watkins sidelined. With a target on 28.3 percent of his routes and a catch on 20.3 percent of his routes over the past two games, Woods is clearly the top read for Tyrod Taylor at this point. The Rams have allowed 211.75 yards per game to receiving corps this season, fourth most in football, suggesting there room for Woods to operate given his sizable market share of Buffalos passing offense. --J.M.Tight endCharles Clay, Buffalo BillsAlong with more frequent usage for Woods, it appears that Clay will find more targets coming his way. On Sunday, against the Patriots, Clay was targeted seven times and caught five of those for 47 yards. This week, his Buffalo Bills draw the Los Angeles Rams. Through four games, the Rams appear to be proficient in stopping opposing tight ends; however a closer look shows that theyve faced only one above-average tight end (Jimmy Graham in Week 2). Expect Clay to be targeted at least seven times, which puts his floor around five catches for 50 yards, which is as good as youll get off the deep end of the wire. --K.D.Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay BuccaneersSince the release of Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Brate has been Jameis Winstons go-to possession valve, ranking second on the team in target share with 19.8 percent of the teams targets over the past two weeks while leading the team with two touchdowns over the span. This usage hasnt been particularly conservative, either, as Brates average target has travelled more than 11 yards downfield, suggesting big-play potential is present for this Harvard product. The Panthers defense has allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to tight ends this season, helping support Brates candidacy as a fine streaming option. --J.M.D/STPittsburgh SteelersMy recommendation of the Steelers isnt based on the strength of their defense, even if they pretty much dominated the Kansas City Chiefs last week. Rather it is completely based on how poorly Ryan Fitzpatrick has played the past two weeks. Granted, Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets faced two teams that were generally continued strong defenses (Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks), but some of those interceptions were caused by the changes in the Jets offense driven by injuries. Those injuries still exist, which means the Steelers should come away with at least two takeaways. --K.D.Tennessee TitansAs is almost always the case when it comes to identifying a streaming defensive option, we focus on finding choice matchups to target. The Dolphins simply havent been able to protect Ryan Tannehill this season, as he has been sacked 11 times and pressured on 29.8 percent of his dropbacks, the fourth-highest rate in the league. Tannehill was sacked five times in Cincinnati in Week 4 via a standard pass rush -- as in four or fewer pass-rushers. This marked the fourth time this season that a team has allowed at least five sacks against standard pressure, with the Dolphins having accounted for two of those games. The Titans like to blitz, as they rank sixth in the league in the rate of blitzes per dropback, so Tannehill could be under siege again with increased pressure this Sunday. --J.M.Individual defensive playersLinebackerZach Brown, Buffalo BillsA rising asset to target given he has tallied an astounding 44 tackles over the past three weeks, Brown leads all inside linebackers with a 20 percent run-stop rate on Pro Football Focus (the rate of stops made on running plays hes on the field for). ... If Brown is owned in your league, were guessing Oaklands Cory James is available. James just recently earned the green dot as the play-calling middleman for the Raiders front seven and he produced 15 tackles in Week 4. Available in over 99 percent of ESPN leagues, James is a name to target even in shallower IDP formats. --J.M.Defensive backJohnathan Cyprien, Jacksonville JaguarsFifth in tackles per game among defensive backs and on the field for over 95 percent of Jacksonvilles defensive snaps, Cyprien is enjoying a productive bounce-back season so far. Questions over his job security this offseason caused Cyprien to slip, but hes a fine DB1 given his current usage metrics. ... Chip Kellys NFL defenses have famously spent a ton of time on the field, as time of possession hasnt proved very important in his snap-happy agenda. This can help for IDP purposes, for example safety Eric Reid -- owned in just 2.8 percent of ESPN leagues as of press time -- is first among safeties in run snaps within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage. Which is to say, he has been busy in the box and is playing lots of snaps against the run, ingredients that could fuel a rewarding tackle rate for those playing in deeper leagues. --J.M.Defensive lineTrent Murphy, Washington RedskinsWe have to recognize Murphys awesome stretch of production over the past three games, as he has tallied four sacks and at least one sack in each outing. Murphy is likely a boom-or-bust option, but thats somewhat inherent when chasing sack production. ... The Denver Broncos Derek Wolfe is among the better defensive end additions to consider, as his healthy tackle rate and ability to pressure the pocket creates a uniquely high floor for an often fickle position. -- J.M. JK Scott Super Bowl Jersey . LOUIS -- Mike Smith is used to facing plenty of shots, so this was nothing new. Kyler Fackrell Super Bowl Jersey . - Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is not a fan of his teams use of the wildcat formation, saying "it makes you look like a high school offence. http://www.officialgreenbaypackerspro.com/Dave-robinson-packers-jersey/ . He hasnt won for a long time but he keeps running his genuine honest races and its probably just a case of him winning one day when everything falls into place for him, Robl said.He gives 100 per cent but he probably just lacks that little bit of turn of foot now that hes a bit older.Iggi Pop has drawn barrier 13 of 14 for Saturday but has the advantage of in-form jockey Tim Clark who will ride him carrying the minimum 54kg.Robl also has Ninth Legion in the Group Three Festival Stakes and three-year-old filly Brulee in the ATC Membership Handicap (1200m).Brulee shoulders 60kg after a solid fourth in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.She has probably got too much weight for her to be winning but in saying that shes very genuine, Robl said.Robl is planning to step her back up to Listed company over 1400m in Brisbane later in the month. The Slad trainer was delighted with the eight-year-old, who ran a tremendous race to be beaten eight and a half lengths by Sprinter Sacre in a vintage renewal of the Queen Mother Champion Chase.Though Gods Own has run many good races on left-handed tracks, George believes his horse is that bit better going the other way as he did when winning the Grade One Ryanair Novice Chase at Punchestown two years ago. A return trip to Ireland is on the cards for the BoyleSports Champion Chase next month.Hes come out of it well. Hes run a good race and were delighted with him, said George.Hes run a very solid race in what was probably a well-above standard renewal of the Champion Chase. He made a mistake at the second last which stopped him in his tracks. There was no bad lucky story. He did definitely jump out to the right there and we know hes going to have better options going right-handed, though he does run good races going left-handed.What will suit him will be going back right-handed when we get the opportunity. He likes this better ground so this is the time of year we have to make use of it.Punchestown is very much at the top of our list. Whether we go to Aintree in between or not, well wait and see. Im not sure yet.The advantage of Cheltenham is that hes only out of his stable for four hours, so hes taken it very well. Nike Air Force 1 Low Pas Cher .With Lewis Hamilton pulling out of this weeks test at the last minute due to a foot injury, Nico Rosberg drove on the first day and Manors Pascal Wehrlein stepped in on the second. After rain on Wednesday afternoon limited Rosbergs running, Thursday started with a damp track before the rain returned in the afternoon and cut the second day short as well.Although the two-day test was scheduled for slick tyre running, Wehrlein could only complete 31 laps on Pirellis intermediate compounds for 2017. Low temperatures meant the data was of limited value and Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery used the conditions to highlight his concerns about conducting pre-season testing at Barcelona next year.Obviously the weather hindered progress to some extent both today and yesterday, as is not entirely unexpected at this time of year in Europe, he said. The same can apply to the early part of next year, which is why we are in favour of some guaranteed warm weather testing in 2017, before the season gets underway. The location of pre-season testing is a hot political issue in Formula One at the moment as Pirelli pushes for the tests to be moved to Bahrain. Mercedes is also in favour of testing in the hotter climate of the Middle East.Pirellis testing programme with its wider tyres continues on Friday in Abu Dhabi as Red Bull takes to the track in the first day of a three-day test at Yas Marina. Italys success against South Africa was, of course, one of the most important wins in its rugby history. The Springboks are ranked fourth in the world and had never been beaten by their hosts before. But victory in Florence was also a triumph for all Italians, during a difficult time for the country.Lets start with the first, essential, news -- the team won the rugby game. It may sound na?ve but it is key. In the recent past, Italy have beaten both France and Ireland for the first time, and went close in other big games too. They almost beat Australia in Florence in 2012, losing by just three points. Italy have twice finished within a converted try of England -- in a freezing Rome in 2010 and then at Twickenham three years later -- and lost 20-6 to New Zealand in front of a record crowd at San Siro. So, they got close. They almost did it, yet they were beaten. Close, but no cigar. On Saturday in Florence they got a huge win and that will make a heck of a difference. A terrific performance was built on their play at the breakdown -- Italy were close to perfect at rucks -- on a top-class defence and on their ability to keep the scoreboard moving when they had the chance. They won the game by dominating the fundamentals of the game. How many times could you say that? Never. Even during those celebrated wins against France and Ireland they were not as competent in the basics.Defensive consultant Brendan Venters influence has been displayed in the blitz-oriented defensive approach adopted on Saturday. It was that system that exposed the essence of Simone Favaro in his entire beauty, and made the difference. But mainly Italy won on aggression and intensity.I have never seen an Italian rugby side playing with such a hunger. I have watched the game again and again and it is impossible to ignore the way that every single aspect of the game, from personal battles to more broader line movements, has been turned into a physical battle by Conor OShea and his staff.Against a Springboks side that in their previous outings showed a total lack of its once devastating tactical kicking game, winning every clash was crucial. And thats where Italy won the game.To ensure possession -- not always necessarily of a high quality -- OShea gave solutions to Italys recent lineout problems with variations. And those variations in jump, throw and time did the job. Then there was the coldness of the Italian kickers. Carlo Canna with those huge try conversions and Edoardo Padovani with that halfway-line penalty that kept the Springboks in reach. Again, Italy got the fundamentals absolutely right.A few words should also be said on Sergio Parisses new role. Red Wings Jerseys 2020. . Every media outlet highlighted the huge performance by the Italy captain but he was not centerstage as he used to be. And that was another key factor in the overall production of his teammates. He played a solid game, he was inspirational as he always is for the team, yet he played like an international No. 8.Parisse did not overcook plays, he wasnt asked to do extra work as he was made to in the past and from the stands the feeling was that he didnt feel obliged to take responsibility in every aspect of the game. OShea made his contribution a crucial part of a team performance. It happened, with less evidence, in that second win over France but for the first time Italy fans saw a sort of Stade Francais-version of Sergio Parisse. And is not a coincidence that we could admire the rise of Padovani, Canna and Giorgio Bronzini, just to name a few, and the return of Tommaso Benvenuti to his highest standards. That is another interesting aspect of the OShea era -- selection policy was finally at its best.We all know that it wasnt by far the best South Africa side ever to run onto a rugby pitch but that was the best XV Coetzee could pick from his tour squad. Italy were given a chance to make history and they took it, capitalising on that one and only opportunity.Details? Not at all. It was the sign of a different mentality. A huge rise in confidence that OSheas system has brought into a revitalised squad. The historic victory put rugby back on the mainstream media radar, reigniting a flame across the country that seemed to be slowly dying. The Azzurri were back on the national newspapers front page and got a lot of attention from national TV. The entire country celebrated this victory. Now Italy have an immediate maturity test. They must perform against Tonga and record a comfortable win.On Saturday in Padua, the Azzurri will not win with the same recipe the they used to beat the Springboks, though. Patience and composure will be vital. Only methodically absorbing the Islanders aggression at the breakdown and winning from that a probable high number of penalties will guarantee the win. They may well end up doing what top tier rugby nations usually do against Italy: stretch the score in the final quarter of the game.It wont be easy for a team that in the past has never shown the ability to control a rugby match. But after that historical result in Florence there is a chance for Italian fans to celebrate their best ever autumn international campaign. ' ' '

    • MILWAUKEE -- The last team in the major leagues to produce a shutout this season, the Brewers now have seven in the teams last 30 games. Air Max 270 2021 Pas Cher . Including two straight over Miami. Yovani Gallardo and four relievers combined on a five hitter and Jonathan Lucroy and Rickie Weeks belted home runs in Milwaukees 6-0 victory over the Marlins on Saturday night, extending Miamis scoreless streak to 24 innings. "Yovani had great command today. He was really efficient," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "When we command the ball were tough to get a lot of runs off of and the relievers keep doing their jobs." Roenicke said he was confident his staff would come around during their 67-game stretch to start the season without a shutout. "Some of the guys we knew were going to pitch well eventually," he said. "We all knew that sooner or later (Wily) Peralta was going to put it together once he got his command. We knew (Gallardo) was going to pitch better. Its good to see. "Early in the season we were getting down by so many runs early. It was tough on the offence. It was tough to stay in a ball game." That the Brewers pitchers have faced the NLs worst offensive team the past two games shouldnt diminish the accomplishments of his staff, Roenicke said. "I just know when we dont pitch well everyone hits us hard," he said. Gallardo (8-8) gave up five hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Lucroy collected four hits in four at-bats and finished a triple short of a cycle. "He can really hit," Roenicke said. "This year, I know he didnt start off well. But we really believe this is a guy who can drive in runs and hit for average." Lucroy knew hed come around. "Its just a matter of putting the work in," he said. "Im trying to stay within myself and find an approach that works. Im pretty much keeping it simple." The Brewers continued their dominance at home against the Marlins, having won 13 of the last 16 games at Miller Park, dating to 2009. The Brewers got to Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi (2-1) for two runs in the first inning. Norichika Aoki and Jean Segura hit back-to-back singles to start the frame and Ryan Braun followed with a two-run double off the base of the centre field wall. The Brewers loaded the bases later in the inning but failed to score. The Brewers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when Lucroy hit a home run that caromed off the heel of the glove of Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton. "Baseball is a crazy game," Lucroy said. "I told (Stanton) I owe him dinner when we play in Miami next year." Stanton was frustrated by his failure to make the catch. "Little things like that hurt us. It wouldnt have been a homer," he said. Weeks led off the fourth inning with a homer to centre field. Jeff Bianchi followed with a double and later scored on Aokis single, giving the Brewers a 5-0 advantage. Lucroys double drove in another run, as the Brewers sent eight batters to the plate in the inning. Eovaldi surrendered 10 hits and six runs in four innings. He struck out five and walked two. Miamis bullpen held Milwaukee scoreless over the final four innings. "Most of the counts, I was behind and the ball was up in the zone. Its frustrating. Its tough to pitch like that," Eovaldi said. Lack of control hurt Eovaldi, Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "He struggled with his command, he was up in the zone with his fastball, and they hit him pretty good," Redmond said. The Marlins loaded the bases in the sixth inning with one out, but Logan Morrison grounded into an inning-ending double play. "I thought we came out flat these first two games, especially offensively," Redmond said. "Were getting completely shut down. Were not getting guys on base and were not getting big hits." NOTES: As part of a Negro Leagues tribute, the Brewers wore reproduction uniforms of the Milwaukee Bears, the citys 1923 representative in the Negro National League. During the athletes parade, the 23-strong Ukrainian team was represented by a lone flagbearer in an apparent protest at the presence of Russian troops in Ukraines Crimean peninsula. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Derek Norris knack for big swings in big moments bailed out the Oakland Athletics again. Norris hit a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, and the As rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-7 on Tuesday night to regain the AL West lead. Five of the catchers 11 career home runs have given Oakland the lead. "He does his best work late in games with runners in scoring position," As manager Bob Melvin said. "Hes gotten big hits for us since he got here last year. If youre going to get a few hits in certain situations, obviously the bigger situations are the type of things that get the respect of your teammates and give us confidence when he comes up there in big situations he can get it done." Norris, who entered the game with a .195 batting average backing up the injured John Jaso, sent the 2-2 changeup from James Russell (1-2) over the left-centre field wall for his fourth home run this season. Josh Donaldson and Chris Young also homered to put the As a half-game ahead of Texas, which lost 9-2 at Seattle. Lefty Stephen Vogt wouldve started at catcher for the As against Scott Feldman, but the Cubs traded the right-hander in the morning. When Norris showed up at the ballpark, he learned lefty Chris Rusin had been called up from Triple-A Iowa to take Feldmans place. "I figured it was probably my turn," Norris said, grinning. Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer to highlight a five-run fourth inning and Welington Castillo drove in three runs for Chicago, which twice blew a two-run lead. The Cubs are 35-46 at their seasons midpoint after another win evaporated because the bullpen couldnt hold a lead. "Just didnt make a good pitch when I needed to and paid for it," Russell said. Dan Otero (1-0) tossed one scoreless inning for his first career win, and Grant Balfour finished it for his 20th straight save this season and 38th overall. Oakland can once again thank its on-again, off-again catcher for a comeback. Besides his big home run, Norris threw out Luis Valbuena for a double play in the ninth when Balfour struck out Starlin Castro. After tossing his first complete game to beat Homer Bailey and the Cincinnati Reds his last time out, As starter A.J. Griffin gave up 10 hits and tied his career high with seven earned runs in 5 2-3 innings. Bailey threw his second career no-hitter Tuesday night to lead the Reds past the Sann Francisco Giants, 3-0. Rusin allowed six hits, struck out two and walked none in 3 1-3 innings for a no-decision in his first major league start this season. He was pitching on three days rest, so Cubs manager Dale Sveum pulled Rusin after 61 pitches. The As roughed up Rusin at the outset. Donaldson hit his 14th home run in the first, and Young followed with his eighth longball of the season in the second to give Oakland a 3-0 lead. The As missed a chance to pile on -- and perhaps run Rusin out of the game even earlier -- when Jed Lowrie struck out with the bases loaded to end the second. While Rusin regrouped in his short stint, so did Chicagos offence. Soriano started the scoring burst when he sent the tying homer over the wall in centre for his 10th home run. The Cubs sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, with Darwin Barney adding a sacrifice fly and Castillo hitting an RBI single to stretch Chicagos lead to 5-3. The Cubs collapsed on defence in the bottom half behind Carlos Villanueva, who allowed two unearned runs in 3 1-3 innings of relief. Running back and to his right on Adam Rosales short fly, shortstop Castro collided with Soriano in left field and the ball dropped. Coco Crisp followed with a tying, two-run single. Castillos two-run double over the head of Young in centre put the Cubs back ahead, 7-5, and chased Griffin. But as has been the case so often this season, Chicago couldnt protect its lead. "Just gotta get the ball down. Its that simple," Russell said. "Its not that difficult. Its just that one thing. Get the ball down and that wont happen." NOTES: Melvin said RHP Jarrod Parker felt a slight discomfort and tightness in his right hamstring during a bullpen session. Melvin said a decision will be made Wednesday on whether Parker, who left with the injury in the fourth inning of Saturdays loss against St. Louis, will make his next scheduled start Thursday against the Cubs. ... The Cubs had never played a regular-season game at the Oakland Coliseum. The franchise has now played in every current major league city and every active ballpark except the new Yankee Stadium. ... Bartolo Colon (11-2, 2.79 ERA) looks to win his ninth straight start when the As face Matt Garza (3-1, 3.82 ERA) and the Cubs on Wednesday. ' ' '

    • Snowboarders now have a new way to click with their ski friends. Chris Jones Jersey .The typical riders hassle of bending down -- or sitting down in the snow -- to buckle boots into the bindings while skiers in their group wait could be a thing of the past.A new technology that enables the boot to snap onto the board similar to a ski binding has the potential to inject fresh life into a sport that has been dealing with slowing growth for the last decade or so.After more than four years of research and more than a decade of trying to find the answer to a question that has long perplexed snowboarders and manufacturers alike, Burton Snowboards is releasing its new Step-On binding -- touting it as a time-saver that wont negatively impact performance. The binding goes on sale next fall and will run between $250 and $400.We asked the question, `What if? said Chris Cunningham, Burtons vice president of product. What if I could save 30 seconds per run?Multiplied by the 10 to 15 runs an average rider logs on any given day, a 30-second difference could mean an extra trip down the mountain per day. Over years, that number could add up into the hundreds. Meanwhile, the binding means less delay, less getting hands wet while fiddling with straps and buckles, less time the skiers in the group have to wait around for their snowboard buddies to prepare their equipment after they get off the lift.Every time my dad goes to strap in at the top of the mountain, he lets out a huge `Aaarrrrrrrgghhh, when hes got to bend over to strap in, said Danny Davis, the two-time Winter X Games champion who rides on a Burton board. Making snowboarding something thats easier to get into, thats a good thing. An improvement in ski technology, combined with unpredictable weather, the Great Recession and increased pricing for lift tickets, helped play into flat numbers for snowboarding over the past decade-plus. SnowSports Industries America reports microscopic growth (from 7.57 million to 7.602 million) in the number of snowboard participants between 2011-12 and last winter.Among Burtons attempts to bring more people to the sport was the invention of the Riglet -- a reel-like device that makes it easier for parents to tow young kids around on the snowboard. The industry has been experimenting with step-in bindings for more than a decade, but the first mass attempt to bring them to market petered out because the performance of the boots was considered subpar. In this latest attempt, 3D printing technology made it possible for developers at Burton to crank out and refine hundreds of prototypes in a very short time. The project began in a secret, walled-off room on the Burton campus where people walked by and said, `Whats up with that wall? Cunningham said.Within months, they were testing prototypes. In four years, they came up with something thats ready for the market.Kimmy Fasani, a professional rider for Burton, said the boot and binding gave her the same level of confidence she had with her old set-up.I think sitting down (to get into the bindings) has always been kind of a nuisance for snowboarders, Fasani said. Theres an efficiency there. Now, if you have friends who are skiers, youre not going to be the guy whos slowing the crowd down. Sammy Watkins Jersey . FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- With a pair of long touchdown passes, Boston College picked up its first victory in almost a year and may have changed its reputation as a run-first offense in the process.Patrick Towles hit former quarterback Jeff Smith on back-to-back, one-play TD drives, and substitute Mike Knoll connected on a pair of field goals on Saturday as the Eagles beat Massachusetts 26-7 for their first win in 10 games.BC was trailing 7-0 late in the second quarter when Towles, taking over at the UMass 46-yard line, found Smith on the first play of the drive. After the Minutemen fumbled at their own 36, Towles again hit Smith on the first play to give the Eagles the lead for good.Totally turned the game around, BC coach Steve Addazio said. Now we have the ability to go and strike it (big).BC has long been known as a rushing team, sending backs like Heisman Trophy finalist Andre Williams to the NFL, along with enough run-blockers to staff a couple of offensive lines. But when Addazio saw UMass trying to crowd the line of scrimmage to take away the ground game, he decided it was time to go for it.People dont expect those shots on first down, especially from us, said Towles, who completed 12 of 22 passes for 191 yards for the Eagles (1-1) and also ran 12 times for 66 yards. Well take that.Smith had five catches for 98 yards, and Jon Hilliman ran 22 times for 54 yards and a 15-yard touchdown for BC, which last won on Sept. 25, 2015, against Northern Illinois. The Eagles lost their final eight games last season and their opener last week, 17-14 to Georgia Tech in Ireland. You need to enjoy the wins, Addazio said. This is a tough game, a tough business were all in. This easily could have been a different scenario, when youre coming off what we came off of.Colton Lichtenberg missed a pair of short field goals last week; Addazio said he was unavailable on Saturday because of a strain in his kicking leg. Knoll, who had been used exclusively in kickoffs, missed his first point-after attempt but converted the second time to make it 13-7.He added third-quarter field goals of 40 and 37 yards. Its unfortuunate Colton went down, Knoll said. Harrison Butker Jersey. But hell be back and well all be kicking lights out.UMass (0-2) put a scare into No. 25 Florida last week, trailing just 10-7 into the fourth quarter. Returning to their sometime home at Gillette Stadium, the Minutemen took a 7-0 lead on a 58-yard pass from Ross Comis to Adam Breneman late in the first quarter.Comis went 11 of 28 for 145 yards and a touchdown. But he also had a pair of first-half fumbles and threw an interception in the third quarter; the turnovers led to 10 BC points.I can give you the old adage, `Ill look at the tape. But, yeah, he lost the game, UMass coach Mark Whipple said. As the quarterback, you dont like to lose. Weve only got two touchdowns in two games.NICE TO BE HEREWith BCs kicking troubles the past few years, Knoll was one of the players requested to the postgame interview area.Yeah, you dont get called up very often. Its good, Knoll said, breaking into a smile. Thanks for bringing me in.Reminded that a kicker is usually asked to speak after missing a field goal, he said: Yeah, thats true. Thats the life we chose.SETTLE DOWNThe Eagles trailed 7-0 and had just 55 total yards in the opening quarter. The touchdowns 84 seconds apart in the second quarter helped the offense relax, Smith said.Being down, that was a real surprise, he said. But I think scoring those two touchdowns quick, really picked (us) up and helped the defense, too. It really gave us confidence to come out in the second half.THE TAKEAWAYBC: In light of BCs struggles to win in the conference, finishing off the Minutemen gives them an FBS win before heading into the ACC opener against Virginia Tech next week.UMASS: After staying close against No. 25 Florida, the Minutemen put another scare into a major college team. But Whipples independent team needs to finish off a victory if it is going to attract an invitation from a conference.UP NEXTBC: Plays at Virginia Tech on Saturday.UMASS: Hosts Florida International on Saturday. • MIAMI -- Pat Rileys pitch to Miami Heat free-agent targets will include an optimistic view of Chris Boshs potential return to the court next season and the long-term stability of coach Erik Spoelstra, league sources have told ESPN. Jimmy Smith Jersey .com.Bosh is making progress in his recovery from recurring blood clots that have cut short each of his past two seasons, according to a source with knowledge of Boshs condition. Both Bosh and the Heat continue to work toward the goal of having the perennial All-Star power forward available for the start of training camp, sources said.Neither Bosh nor the Heat have said publicly where Bosh is in his recovery or whether the 13-year veteran has continued a regimen of blood-thinning medication. Bosh was the Heats leading scorer and best 3-point shooter when he was sidelined at the February All-Star break and went on to miss the final 29 games of the regular season as well as Miamis playoff run into the second round.Boshs $23 million salary due next season will count against the Heats salary cap regardless of whether he plays, but that salary would come off the books in February if he is unable to play in a game next season and retires because of the medical condition. Last month, Riley said Boshs status was the X factor in determining where the Heat stood entering free agency. That is the difficult thing for me in evaluating how far weve come and how good we are, Riley said entering the summer. It really cant be answered. It can only be answered hypothetically if Chris was healthy. Then you would have a real idea, probably, about how everything would fit.Meanwhile, the Heat have determined that Spoelstra will be a long-term fit with the roster as the two sides finalize a contract extension that will keep the coach in place for at least the next three seasons. Spoelstra, 45, was set to enter the final season on his contract, but the team had always planned to extend a deal that would grant him a pay raise and increased role in personnel matters, sources said.Miami has roughly $42 million in salary-cap space, nine free agents to address and a Sunday meeting in New York scheduled in an effort to woo marquee target Kevin Durant to South Florida. Before then, the Heat must determine whether to offer center Hassan Whiteside a contract of $98 million over four years or let the top big man on the market bolt for another team eager extend him a max deal.Whitesides journey has been well-chronicled during his two seasons in Miami, where the former second-round pick of the Sacramento Kings landed after he initially washed out of the league and toiled through stints in Lebanon and China.Riley recently met with Whiteside to set the course for free agency, but the NBAs leading shot-blocker has lined up sessions with the Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers in the initial hours of free agency. Keeping Whiteside remains among the top goals for the Heat, but Riley is also prepared to pursue secondary options among a group of available centers that include Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Al Jefferson, Bismack Biyombo and Roy Hibbert.Whiteside, 27, said last week that loyalty to the Heat wouldnt be a major tipping point in a decision on his future he hopes will crystalize by Friday night. After earning the league minimum of $990,000 last season, Whiteside could command as much as $22 million in first-year salary on his next contract.I hope its an easy decision, said Whiteside, who finished third in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting and ranked in the top five in blocks, rebounds and field goal percentage last season. I find it flattering because in my past I was trying to call teams [for tryouts]. Now its the other way around.Franchise pillar Dwyane Wade, 34, has privately warned against taking him for granted and has not ruled out exploring opportunities with other playoff teams.Wade, who has spent all 13 seasons of his career with the Heat, has said for months that his hope is to remain in Miami his entire career. Wade also said he didnt foresee going through another difficult negotiation similar to the one last summer, when his agent and Riley eventually stepped aside as Wade and Heat owner Micky Arison met at Wades home to hammer out a one-year, $20 million deal. But I dont pay myself, Wade said last month after having played in 74 games, his most in five seasons. This offseason shapes up as the biggest free-agency period Riley and the Heat have faced since James left to return to Cleveland in 2014. Riley insists hes ready for another major offseason challenge, one that includes making the last currently scheduled recruiting pitch to Durant this weekend. Why wouldnt I be optimistic? Riley said recently of Miamis general free agency plans. Plus we have flexibility this year and next year. To me, the only way you can make a dramatic change in your team is to get a proven superstar, if you can, some way, through free agency. Every now and then, it happens. I think you have to look at it and you have to keep yourself a little bit of flexibility for that to happen. • METAIRIE, La. Deebo Samuel Super Bowl Jersey . -- Injuries have cost the Saints receiver Joseph Morgan and defensive end Kenyon Coleman for the season, depriving New Orleans of a top deep threat and a veteran run-stopper. Morgan hurt his left knee in Saturdays scrimmage, and coach Sean Payton said Wednesday his diagnosis has come back as a torn meniscus and partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament. Payton said Coleman, who left practice Tuesday, tore a pectoral muscle, which also requires season-ending surgery. "Obviously they are losses," Payton said. "We have to find some guys to step up and take their spot." Morgans injury was the latest setback in a tough year for the third-year receiver, who was arrested for drunk driving during the off-season. An undrafted free agent out of NAIA Walsh University, Morgan now is expected to spend his second full season on injured reserve in his young career. After a highlight-filled rookie preseason, he spent 2011 on injured reserve with a knee injury. In 2012, he emerged as one of the teams top down-field targets, catching 10 passes for 379 yards and three TDs, a whopping 37.9 yards per reception. That performance was strong enough that the Saints allowed Devery Henderson to leave in free agency, making Morgan his heir apparent as the No. 3 receiver behind veterans Lance Moore and Marques Colston. "You see how hard he has worked this off-season and you see how much he has improved and just how much hes gaining that confidence," Brees said of Morgan. "His role was there. Then all of a sudden thats taken away." Morgans injury occurred when he was dragged down by safety Kenny Vaccaro, a first-round draft choice whose heavy collisions in mostly non-tackling practices has won praise from some defensive teammates but nearly led to a couple of scuffles. Morgan has said on social media that Vaccaro should not be blamed for his injury, and other teammates chimed in Wednesday. "Look, you love having that guy on your team," right tackle Zach Strief said of Vaccaro. "Do we feel like hes too physical sometimes in practice? Sure. But we feel the same way about some D-linemen and some linebackers, and they feel the same way about us. "Kenny is who he is and Im glad hes on the team and I certainly wish that Joe was still with us, but its part of the game," Strief continued. "I would never watch a guy make a legitimate football play and have someone get hurt and say, Its your fault." Coleman was entering his 12th season after spending the past two with new Saints defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan in Dallas, where he worked as a run-stopping end in Ryans 3-4 (three linemen, four linebackers) defence. The 6-foot-5, 293-pound Coleman started 15 in 2011 but only five last season because of a torn triceps. The Saints hoped he would be a regular and provide veteran leadership as New Orleans switches its defensive alignment from the 4-3 scheme it has used for years. "It stinks losing him," said Strief, who has had to block Coleman in practice. "Good player, good teammate, good guy, a lot of knowledge. Hes helped me a lot in this camp just understanding how 3-4 guys play. ... Losing any guy hurts but thats the nature of the beast. ... Somebodys got to step up and someones going to get an opportunity to be successful like he was." The Saints still have depth at Colemans position, with Cameron Jordan, Akiem Hicks and Tom Johnson. This week New Orleans signed veteran journeyman receiver Steve Breaston, wholl compete for playing time with a host of young, inexperienced receivers including recent draft picks Nick Toon and Kenny Stills, as well as young free agents like Andy Tanner, Jarred Fayson and Preston Parker. Free safety Malcolm Jenkins has gotten a good look at the young receivers from his side of scrimmage, and said it will be interesting to see what kind of chemistry they develop with the Saints star quarterback as the preseason wears on. "The biggest plus is that we have Drew Brees," Jenkins said. "He makes a lot of guys look good. And youve got some young guys really stepping up and playing pretty well." • OXNARD, Calif. Vapormax 97 Cheap . -- Dallas Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain was not on the teams chartered flight to California on Thursday, and he has until 2 p.m. PT Friday to report to training camp or be subject to a fine or worse. The Cowboys have not released McClain, who is set to be suspended for the first 10 games of the season for a violation of the leagues substance-abuse policy.Coach Jason Garrett did not want to comment on McClains absence.Well talk about that stuff later, he said after signing autographs for military personnel at Naval Air Station Point Mugu after the teams arrival.Garrett, along with team owner and general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones, will hold a state of the Cowboys news conference Friday.Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Stephen Jones said of McClains status: Thats another one thats a work in progress. Well leave it at that. The Cowboys re-signed McClain to a one-year deal worth as much as $5 million earlier in the offseason. He received a $750,000 signing bonus. If the Cowboys cut him, he would cost $750,000 against the cap, but the Cowboys would gain roughly $2.6 million in cap room due to his $1.25 million base salary and $1.375 million in per-game roster bonuses. The team could also earn a cap credit in 2017 for part of McClains signing bonus.McClain did not participate in organized team activities and missed most of the voluntary offseason program. He reported to the mandatory minicamp in June but did not practice because he was not in good enough condition. After McClains suspension was announced, the Cowboys signed veteran linebacker Justin Durant.McClain joined the Cowboys in a trade from the Baltimore Ravens in 2014 after Dallas lost?Sean Lee to a season-ending injury in the offseason. In 12 games, McClain was credited with 108 tackles by the coaches to go along with a sack, nine tackles for loss, two interceptions and a forced fumble. He missed the first four games of last season because of a substance-abuse suspension. In 11 games, he was credited with 97 tackles, two sacks, nine tackles for loss and an interception.Attempts to reach McClains agent, Pat Dye, were unsuccessful. Nike Vapormax 2019 Outlet . LOS ANGELES -- Even after Blake Treinen gave up the Los Angeles Dodgers tiebreaking run in the eighth inning of Game 4, the Washington reliever wasnt discouraged by his performance or the Nationals painful loss.Win or lose, Treinen and the Nationals recognize the stellar quality of baseball being played in this NL Division Series.I didnt make a bad pitch, Treinen said of the down-and-in slider that Chase Utley smacked for a single to drive in the go-ahead run. He just made a really good swing. We got a groundball. It just wasnt where we wanted it. Tip your cap.Two division champions with reputations as postseason underachievers have been largely outstanding in this series. Although the Nationals lost 6-5 on Tuesday in their first shot to clinch, they claim theyre actually looking forward to the grand finale. The emotion here is so high, said Max Scherzer, who will start Game 5 on Thursday at Nationals Park. This is such a competitive series, and both sides are playing extremely well. Every little thing matters. Everything can go to one pitch, one play, one call. Thats why the postseason is the best. Everything matters. The Nationals will have their ace on the mound when they try again to win a playoff series for the first time since the team relocated to Washington before the 2005 season. The franchise has won one postseason series -- the Montreal Expos beat Philadelphia in 1981.Washington nearly got it done on the West Coast, but the Nationals realized they didnt lose Game 4 as much as the Dodgers won it.Los Angeles got to inexperienced Nats starter Joe Ross for four early runs, but Washington pounded out a thrilling rally to tie it against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers vaunted bullpen in the seventh.Kershaw battled Bryce Harper through a memorable eight-pitch at-bat, walking the Washington star on his 110th and final pitch to load the bases.Man, thats what baseball is all about right there, Washington manager Dusty Baker said. A matter of will. And Kershaw was on empty there. We knew it. They knew it. Everybody knew it. That was some battle.Baker turned over the seventh to Treinen, who gave up one run in 12 September appearances. A consummate groundball pitcher, Treinen got grounders from Andre Ethier and Utley -- but they both found holes .Utley then made a nifty defensive play at second base when Harper grounded out against Dodgers closer Kenley Janseen to end it. Vapormax 2019 Midnight Navy. You still lost, so its not fun to look back and go, `Oh, what a competitive game, said Harper, who went 0 for 3 with two walks.GAME 5 HISTORYThe Nationals played a decisive fifth game at home in the 2012 Division Series against St. Louis, and it didnt go so well.Washington led by six runs early and 7-5 going into the ninth, only to lose 9-7 to the Cardinals. The Nationals were one strike from finishing it off, but became the first team to lose after leading by more than four runs in a winner-take-all playoff game.Harper, who homered in that game as a rookie, shrugged off the memory. You never dread another day of playing baseball, he said. You dont want to have another offseason, so weve got a great guy going, and were excited to get back to our fans. ... Hopefully were slammed and jam-packed, and everybody is wearing their red.ROSS ROUSTEDThe Nationals chose the 23-year-old Ross to make his postseason debut in Game 4, hoping he wouldnt be adversely affected by 11 days off and three months without much game action. He made just three appearances in September after missing 66 games with right shoulder problems.Ross wasnt terrible, but he struggled with control -- and the Dodgers hit with appropriate desperation. Adrian Gonzalez delivered a two-run homer in the first inning after Ross hit Justin Turner with a pitch to keep the inning going.Los Angeles got a leadoff double in the third from Kershaw, but the ace was nearly stranded before Turner delivered a two-out RBI single . Ross then fell apart, walking consecutive batters and hitting Joc Pederson with his final pitch to force in Los Angeles fourth run.Ross gave up four runs, three hits and two walks.I felt good out there, but I just didnt really execute in the third inning, Ross said. Hopefully, I get another chance to get out there.UP NEXTScherzer, the Nats 20-game winner and Cy Young Award contender, is expected to face Dodgers lefty Rich Hill on Thursday. Scherzers tendency to give up homers was the biggest flaw in his stellar regular season, and he served up gopher balls to Corey Seager and Justin Turner while taking the loss in Game 1. This is the biggest start of my career, Scherzer said. Biggest start of my life. Im not going to shy away from it. ' ' '

    • So here we are, in September baseball nirvana. DeShawn Williams Jersey Store . Its a beautiful thing.Seven teams are scrambling for the finish line in the last week of the regular season, within two games of a playoff spot. And here we are, trying to watch or follow them all, with flat-screens, iPads, laptops and phones smoking. Now that is our definition of September nirvana. We have four days left in this baseball season. And ladies and gentlemen, this is going to be fun.I think its going to be whacked, said one baseball executive whose team has been trying to hang in this race. I think its going to be so emotional day to day. I wouldnt want to have to go on TV and talk about it ... because youre going to have a different opinion every day.So how do you keep your brain from overloading as you try to follow all this? Allow us to help you out here -- with our handy-dandy guide to what to watch this week:Intrigue north of the borderHave you checked those American League wild-card standings lately? Allow us to refresh your memory:Toronto 87-71Baltimore 86-72And guess which two teams finish their series in Toronto on Thursday? After Two rising stars, in Aaron Sanchez (Blue Jays) and Kevin Gausman (Orioles), battled Tuesday in a 5-1 Toronto win, Hyun Soo Kim gave the Orioles a much-needed lift with a ninth-inning home run?Wednesday; and two talented guys whose seasons have been roller-coaster rides, in Marcus Stroman (Blue Jays) and Ubaldo Jimenez (Orioles), are set to square off Thursday. The stakes are these: As close as those standings make this race appear, the Orioles probably had to sweep to win the first wild-card spot. If they wind up tied for the last two tickets to the party, the Blue Jays win the season series and still would host the wild-card game on Oct. 4.Survivor: AL West redemption islandMeanwhile, the Mariners and Astros might have waved adios to the Rangers a long time ago -- but theyre still breathing. After an epic Mariners win in the opener to their three-game series Monday night and a huge Astros comeback Tuesday, Seattle finished off the series with a blowout victory Wednesday afternoon.Realistically, though, even running the table at this point might not be enough for the Astros. Theyre now four games back of Baltimore in the loss column. So theyd need a 3-0 finish just to get to 86 wins. The Mariners, on the other hand, have charged to within two of Baltimore and are just a game back of Detroit.?A Seattle sweep would have put the Mariners in excellent shape, but they still very much are despite Tuesdays loss, considering they finish the season with four games at home against Oakland, while the Orioles spend the final days of the season on the road at Toronto and New York. Two tidbits to file away: (A) The Mariners are 10-2 against Oakland since the start of May, and (B) a Mariners-Orioles tiebreaker game would be played in Seattle because the Mariners went 6-1 against the Os this year.Drama in DetroitEvery time you think the Tigers are done for, they seem to rip off five wins in a row. And every time you think theyve taken control of their own fate, they play three games as messy as the three they played starting this past weekend. They went into the ninth inning Saturday with a half-game lead on Baltimore and a two-run lead over Kansas City. Then Francisco Rodriguez coughed up five runs in the ninth. That kicked off a brutal three-game losing streak in which their staff allowed 24 runs in the next 19 innings. And the upshot is, theyd dropped to two games back of Baltimore with six to play.As ugly as those past three losses had been and as bleak as their 2-14 record against Cleveland might have appeared heading into Tuesday, the Tigers are now in better shape than you might have thought. On Tuesday, Justin Verlander & Co. rocked the Tribe 12-0 before Miguel Cabreras heroics carried the Tigers to another win Wednesday night. Now, Daniel Norris (3.26 ERA since rejoining the rotation in August) gets his chance at Cleveland in Thursdays finale. Then theyll finish the season with three games in Atlanta, where the Braves have a ballpark to close up. So are the Tigers dead? Not yet.History in the NL?The bad news is, over in the National League, we have no head-to-head meetings left among serious contenders. The good news is, that might set up a finish unlike anything weve seen at any point in the division-play era -- which is now in its 48th season. The Mets have 74 losses. The Giants have 75 and the Cardinals are a game back at 82-76. Never, in any of the previous 47 seasons, have we witnessed a three-team tie in any race -- division or wild card -- in the final week of the season. So is this the year? Lets root for that, OK?The Mets pathAfter an emotional series in Miami, the Mets play their final three games in Philadelphia. They had Noah Syndergaard return to the rotation Tuesday (in a 12-1 win) after missing a turn with strep throat. That sets him up to start again Sunday in the final game of the season if they need to win. Hes the last ace standing. And the Mets have never needed him more. But no team faces greater pressure than the Mets do to get this over with fast. Suppose they have to burn Syndergaard on Sunday? Suppose theres a tiebreaker game Monday, with neither Syndergaard nor Bartolo Colon available to pitch it? As big a lifesaver as Robert Gsellman (3-2, 2.56) has been, it wouldnt quite be their dream scenario to go into a Gsellman vs.?Madison Bumgarner survival game -- or something like that. The Giants pathDont ask us how the Giants are still alive and kicking. Theyve won one series in all of September (at Arizona two weeks ago). They havent won a series at home since Aug. 26-28 (against Atlanta). They havent won a series against a team thats currently over .500 since June 10-12 (against L.A.).But if the wild-card game were today, they would be playing in it. Somehow. Now, to finish this deal, they might actually have to win some games, especially after being shut out by the Rockies on Wednesday night. The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill (blister permitting) penciled in to start against them this weekend. You think they would take any joy in sending the Giants home for the winter -- in an even year, no less? Yeah, us, too.The Cardinals pathThe St. Louis Cardinals are 34-43 at Busch Stadium. Is that crazy, or what? Well, its also relevant because they have four more home games stretched before them the rest of the way, against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.Games to circle: the dazzling Alex Reyes against the underrated Dan Straily on Thursday. (The Cardinals have hit .176 against Straily this year.) Then Carlos Martinez?faces Pirates phenom Tyler Glasnow on Friday. And an Adam Wainwright-Ryan Vogelsong duel is possible for Sunday. So why do we have a feeling well be seeing a Cardinals-Giants tiebreaker game Monday in St. Louis? Just a hunch.Five more stories to watch? Try this on for Cys: Four?days left, and theres no clear-cut leader in either leagues Cy Young derby. So dont underestimate the importance of the final start(s) of the year for Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, Verlander, Chris Sale,?and a half-dozen other aces. Just two years ago, Corey Kluber wrestled this trophy away from King Felix in Clevelands 160th game of the year. So it happens!? Plant a seed: If you think home field matters, five of the six division winners have major incentive to play it out this week. The Dodgers (37-40 on the road but 53-28 at home) are just two games behind the Nationals (47-30 home, 45-36 road) for the second seed -- which determines who holds home-field advantage in their first-round matchup next week. And L.A. gets that edge if it finishes with the same record. In the AL, not much separates the Red Sox (46-32 home and 46-34 road), Rangers (52-26 home, 42-39 road) and Indians (53-28 home, 38-39 road) in the late-breaking three-way tussle for the No. 1 seed. The Indians lose out on every potential tiebreaker formula. But the Boston-Texas tiebreaker depends on division games this week, as they split their five games head-to-head.? 20 is plenty: In Tampa Bay, Rays ace Chris Archer started the season dreaming of winning 20 games. Hes suddenly in danger of becoming the first pitcher to lose 20 in a season since Mike Maroth dethroned Brian Kingmans 23-year reign as the last 20-game loser back in 2003. Since Maroth did it for the Tigers, no pitcher has ever even been allowed to start a game after reaching 19 losses. But as of now, Archer is still scheduled to pitch Thursday against the White Sox. Let us be the first to mention that Archer clearly doesnt deserve this fate. He could still lead the AL in strikeouts. And his eight criminally unsupported starts (six-plus innings, no more than one run of support while on the mound) are the second-most in the league. Coincidentally, the league leader in that stat -- Jose Quintana, with 10 CUSes -- is the opposing pitcher Thursday. Think either team will score?? Papis last stand: Have you heard that David Ortiz is retiring? Has word of that gotten around? Just checking. Well, this is it for the regular season. Finally. And its possible there might be some Papi festivities at Fenway this weekend. Just a hunch. No player has ever led the major leagues in either slugging or OPS in his final season. Unless he forgets to get another hit, Ortiz can count on clinching the lead in both categories this weekend. But heres a really fun rarity for him to shoot for: He needs three more home runs to hit 40 at 40, which would make him the oldest player ever to homer his age. Barry Bonds did it in 2004, at 40 years, 2 months. Ortiz is 40 years, 10 months old.? 2011 revisited? Finally, does anybody still have a vision of the final night of the season back in 2011? Pretty memorable evening, wasnt it? We know of at least two books that were written about just that one night, so it must have been an all-timer. Well, were all set up to have it happen again Sunday afternoon. There are 15 games scheduled that day. Theyll all start about the same time -- 3 p.m. ET. It isnt out of the question that as many as eight of them could determine which teams get to keep playing and which of them go home. Anyone else rooting hard for the sheer joyful madness of trying to keep track of all eight of them simultaneously? We just raised our hands. How about you? • LONDON -- Handed the captaincy of England and Manchester United, Wayne Rooney curbed his once wild behavior that landed him in trouble. Ken Boyer .But at 31, and as a father-of-three, Rooneys conduct is under scrutiny again.Once again, he has been forced to issue an apology just as he is struggling to hold a place in United and England starting lineups. The statement of contrition to the England management and fans came after Rooney dropped into a wedding taking place at the England team hotel on Saturday night. Pictures of the bleary-eyed striker were published with guests.Rooney, who played in Fridays World Cup qualifying win over Scotland, was off duty at the time but the behavior of Englands all-time top scorer is still troubling the team management.Rooney acknowledged the Football Associations concerns.Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today, Rooneys management team said in response to a front-page story in The Sun newspaper. Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognizes that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both (interim manager) Gareth Southgate and (technical director) Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologize. He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures. When asked about the pictures after Tuesdays draw with Spain, Southgate insisted Rooneys absence from the friendly was due to an injury sustained in Fridays win over Scotland rather than being the result of The Suns story. But the FA said on Wednesday: All England personnel have a responsibility to behave appropriately at all times. We will be reviewing our policy around free time whilst on international duty.Rooney has endured a checkered career. Once the golden boy of English soccer who burst onto the international scene with four goals at Euro 2004, Rooneys impact has been on the wane as age has slowed him.Rooney has also struggled to shake off his bad-boy image.Rooneys stock fell so low that an English town burned a 30-foot effigy of him in 2010 after he was accused of cheating on his wife with a prostitute and publicly threatened to quit United. In the same year, then-England manager Fabio Capello warned Rooney about his off-field conduct after he was pictured urinating and smoking in the street at the end of a night out.His temper has caused problems on the field. DES MOINES, Iowa -- Drake coach Ray Giacoletti abruptly resigned Tuesday after three-plus seasons, saying it was time for a new voice to lead the Bulldogs out of a skid that has them just 1-7 so far this season.Giacoletti, a former coach at Utah, went 32-69 at Drake and will be replaced by assistant Jeff Rutter for the rest of the season. Athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb wouldnt speculate on Rutters status following the season.Giacolletis stint with the Bulldogs got off to a promising start, as he finished 15-16 in 2013-14 at a program with just one NCAA Tournament appearance since 1971.But Drake finished 9-22 and 7-24 in the next two seasons. The Bulldogs only win so far in 2016-17 came against Division III Simpson College, and last week they went through a brutal stretch that included two-point losses at DePaul and Fresno State. It felt like this was the right move, Giacoletti said. Im a big boy. I understand how this thing works. Its year four, and where our team needs to be, in my opinion, not anybody elses opinion, where I believe our team should be, Im accountable for that. I didnt feel like we were there, and I didnt feel like there was a whole lot of how I could help it change. The promotion was bittersweet for Rutter, a close friend of Giacolettis who will be a Division I head coach for the first time.Rutter has spent 30 years in coaching, including a stint as the head coach at Division II Wisconsin-Parkside from 1996-2003. Tom Davis, who had recently been let go at Iowa, took over in the early 2000s and made the program competitive before handing the program over to his son. Keno Davis led Drake on a remarkable run in 2007-08, winning the Missouri Valley Conference and earning a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He left for Providence after that season and was replaced by Mark Phelps, a strong recruiter who couldnt make the Bulldogs a winner in five seasons.Hatfield-Clubb thought she had found the right guy in Giacoletti, a former head coach at Utah?(2004-07, going 54-50)) and a Gonzaga assistant who hoped to follow the blueprint that Mark Few used to maintain sustained success with the Zags.Unless Rutter can show marked improvement with this years roster, shell likely have yet another coaching search on her hands this spring. Our team is not where we expected to be when we originally talked about that vision, Hatfield-Clubb said. Cheapest Air Max 270 .Sports photographer Neil Leifer, who shot the pictures for more than 200 Sports Illustrated covers, is selling prints of his best photographs. The most treasured photos are signed and come with Leifers credentials that got him into the events. The auction of photos Leifer owns taken by other photographers will be sold Friday in New York City by Guernseys. Pictures that Leifer took and owns will be sold Saturday. The piece expected to go for the most money is the shot taken at Ali-Liston II in Lewiston, Maine, in May 1965.The 11-by-14 inch photo was made through the expensive dye transfer process and is signed by both Ali and Leifer. Ali wrote under the photo: To Neil Leifer, Thank you for such a great picture. The picture is mounted and comes with Leifers credentials for the dressing room, the weigh-in and the fight and the original envelope they came in.The bidding for the piece started online at $160,000. There have not been any bidders thus far, but Guernseys president Arlan Ettinger said he believes the piece could sell for at least $500,000.Leifer, 22 at the time, was situated perfectly for the shot, as SI senior photographer Herb Scharfman took the other side of the ring. Scharfman wound up in between Alis legs in the photo.Another famous photo included in the auction is the shot Leifer took from the Astrodome roof when Ali fought Cleveland Williams. That item, which is signed by Leifer and includes his credentials, has hit the opening bid of $80,000.NFL photos up for bid include?Leifers picture of the opening handshake at Super Bowl I and?a photo from the 1958 NFL championship game, dubbed The Greatest Game Ever Played, which Leifer shot on the day he turned 16.Ettinger said some photos have a reserve price that will not be publicly disclosed but exist because Leifer would rather keep them if the price is not right. The record price paid for sports photographs was $1.79 million in August by a collector who bought photographer Charles Conlons work. Conlon took pictures of baseball players from 1904 to 1942. The auction included the negatives. The Leifer auctions are only for the photos being sold and do not include the rights to the photos themselves, many of which are owned by Sports Illustrated. Two days ago, the name Kyle Chalmers would have left a lot of people scratching their head -- even after he swam in Australias Olympic bronze medal-winning 4x100m freestyle relay. How things change.Chalmers is Australias latest sporting hero after he became the nations first Olympic 100m freestyle gold medalist since Mike Wenden in the 1968 Games in Mexico City.So who is Kyle Chalmers? His father, Brett Chalmers, is a South Australian football icon who built his reputation with state league club Port Adelaide. He played 120 games that earned four premierships as well as a Jack Oatey Medal as man of the match in the 1998 grand final. Chalmers also played a total of 75 games for both Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide in the Australian Football League, and the allure of football seemed to be drawing his son in.Growing up in Port Lincoln, South Australia, Kyle Chalmers dreamed of following in his fathers footsteps. He stumbled into swimming only when he decided to participate in a school swimming carnival for fun. But powered by his enormous feet -- size 11 at age 11 -- Kyle stormed to victory in his school carnival, and things snowballed. Seven hour-plus journeys to compete in South Australian championships became de rigueur, and his swimming rose to levels that saw him qualify for national titles and thus commit more time to swimming than to football.Chalmers broke his first national age record in 2012, in the 13-and-under 100m freestyle. Since then, he has claimed every Australian age record in this event and added the world junior mark in the heats at Rio 2016.Chalmers was competitive as an under-age entrant at the World Youth Olympics in 2014, but it wasnt until the 2015 world championships that he began to stand out from the crowd. Australia failed to qualify for the 4x100m freestyle relay final, but Chalmers clocked a 47.92 split as the second man off the blocks. Of the 120 swimmers who competed in the heats, Chalmers time was the third fastest. He stamped himself a swimmer to watch with three gold medals at the 2015 world junior championships in Singapore, where he touched the wall first in the 100m freestyle (48. Cheapest Air Max Store. .47), 50m freestyle (22.19) and 4x100 freestyle relay (48.41 split). Attending school at Immanuel College in Adelaide, Chalmers decided to concentrate on his Olympics preparation while undertaking work experience at AFL club Port Adelaide.Although he went to the 2016 Australian Olympic trials in Adelaide as a rising star, he still had not made his name. With 2012 Olympic silver medalist James Magnussen missing automatic selection, Chalmers went under the radar, even after he finished second to golden boy Cam McEvoy in a time that broke the world junior record.Chalmers arrived in Rio de Janeiro still not spoken about in major circles, and it wasnt until his split time in the 4x100m freestyle heats that people began to take notice. His time of 47.04 was easily the quickest of any swimmer in the heats. Then Chalmers played a critical role in securing Australia the bronze medal in the final of the 4x100m relay, as he swam the second leg and moved Australia from eighth to second. Still, many still thought McEvoy was the Australian to beat in the individual event.Chalmers turned in a seventh-place finish in the semifinal of the 100m freestyle, and many thought he had too much to overcome. Having built his fast-finishing style on that of childhood idol Ian Thorpe, however, Chalmers knew he was a chance. With his now size 15 feet powering him along, he had what it took. Chalmers touched the wall in 47.88, the second-fastest qualifying time, behind defending champion Nathan Adrian (47.83) and ahead of McEvoy (47.93). He then produced an identical game plan in the final: After another slow start, he turned in seventh place before powering home to claim the title of sprint king. The allure of AFL still floats around, but the mantra of being Australias swimming icon -- and an Olympic champion -- should suffice for now. • DENVER -- Tyler Chatwood returns to the Colorado Rockies rotation on Saturday, confident the back problems that twice forced him to the disabled list this season will not plague him in the final month of the season. Yeezy 500 Wholesale .Chatwood, who is 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA, was reinstated from the disabled list (mid-back strain) before Fridays game. He last started for the Rockies on Aug. 14 at Philadelphia and allowed six runs (four earned) in four innings. After the game, Chatwood said his back strain limited him to throwing to his arm side -- inside to a right-handed hitter and away to a lefty. My ball was flat, Chatwood said before Fridays game. Everything was up, not being able to extend and get through my pitches. So everything was flat and (I was) missing up.Chatwood made a rehab start for Double-A Hartford on Monday and threw 73 pitches in 4 1/3 innings while allowing two unearned runs.I feel like I have (downward) angle, and Im able to throw like I want to, Chatwood said.Chatwoods first trip to the disabled list came after a June 18 start at Miami where he lasted 1 2/3 innings before being forced out by back soreness. He was reinstated from the disabled list on July 5.Chatwood said his goal in the final month of the season is to just pitch like I was at the beginning before I got hurt, try to find that again. I think I created bad habits by my back (being strained). So just try to work through those, stay on target, help us win games.Chatwood has thrown 127 1/3 innings in 22 starts this season. He underwent his second Tommy John surgery in July 2014 after pitching 24 innings for the Rockies that year and didnt pitch for them last season.Hence, the Rockies were going to monitor Chatwoods innings this season, and his time on the disabled list essentially accomplished that objective. But Chatwood wasnt expecting to miss time because of back soreness. In the grand scheme of things, I dont know if they were going to let me throw a lot more innings than Im going to end up throwing anyway, Chatwood said. So I think itll work out the same. But its just frustrating going through what I did and having to be on the (disabled list) for a back issue. In seven career appearances (six starts) against the Diamondbacks, Chatwood is 4-1 with a 3.75 ERA. Three of those starts came at Coors Field, and Chatwood is 2-1 with a 5.93 ERA in those games.Chatwood is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in there starts this season against Arizona. He lost the last one on May 9 at Coors Field, allowing six runs and seven hits in six innings in Arizonas 10-5 win. Chatwood is 4-7 with a 5.83 ERA in 12 home starts this season and 6-1 with a 1.82 ERA in 10 starts on the road.Rookie Braden Shipley will oppose Chatwood. Hes 2/3 with a 4.75 ERA in seven starts. The last was Aug. 26 against Cincinnati, a no-decision in which Shipley gave up four hits and one run in seven innings with four walks and one strikeout in a game the Diamondbacks won 4-3 in 11 innings.Shipley made his major league debut on July 25 and has never faced the Rockies.Outfielder Socrates Brito is expected to start Saturday for the Diamondbacks. They recalled him from Trople-A Reno on Friday to take the roster spot of outfielder Michael Bourn, who was traded Wednesday to Baltimore for a minor league outfielder.Brito, who began his fourth stint with the Diamondbacks this season, hit .294 in 73 games at Reno with 10 doubles, eight triples, six homers and 39 RBI. He suffered a fractured right big toe when he fouled a ball off his foot on June 23 during Arizonas last visit to Coors Field but appeared in six games from Aug. 9 to Aug. 14 with the Diamondbacks before rejoining them Friday. In 19 games with them this season, Brito is hitting .185 (10-for-54) with two homers and five RBI.Were excited, Arizona manager Chip Hale said before Fridays game. He has gotten really hot down in Reno, so well get him in the game hopefully tomorrow and start him, get him going and keep him hot. In this (spacious) ballpark, hell be an integral part of the defense. Is he going to play every day here? Probably not. When the Triple-A season ends (Monday), well probaby get (Mitch) Hanigar back and Pete OBrien. Theres going to be a lot of at-bats to divide up in the outfield. Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Clay For Sale . In a year that already has proved to be massive for the UFC, with one major card after another, UFC 205 on Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York looks to be the biggest and most important of them all. In honor of such a marquee event, ESPN.com is providing dedicated previews to all 13 bouts on the card, breaking down whats at stake and projecting who will win, along with quotes and statistics for each fighter.Womens bantamweights: Liz Carmouche (10-5) vs. Katlyn Chookagian (8-0)Odds as of Nov. 2: Carmouche +165; Chookagian -190Whats at stake?Carmouche ready to end unwanted layoffAfter her last fight in April 2015, Carmouche asked the UFC for a short break to get some personal affairs in order. The problem was, once she was ready to start up again, the promotion evidently wasnt on the same page.Feels like Ive been asking to fight for a full year now, Carmouche said. I honestly dont know what happened. I thought maybe Id made someone mad and got blacklisted. The only thing I can imagine is discussions for the purchase of the UFC put things on hold -- but if booking me to a huge card in New York was their way of saying, Sorry this took so long, Ill take it.Carmouche, 32, did participate in an Eddie Bravo Invitational grappling match in September, which was broadcast on UFC Fight Pass. Even with the time off, Carmouche wouldnt be far away from title contention if she were to get past the undefeated Chookagian.I believe I built momentum competing in jiu-jitsu, showcasing all the skill sets I have, Carmouche said. Winning this fight just progresses that momentum and gets me back in title contention.Chookagian: I think I represent the newer generationWhen UFC 205 was first announced, the 27-year-old Chookagian immediately pulled up the UFCs female roster and liked what she saw.The promotion is not flush with female talent based out of New York. Chookagian, a Philadelphia native who now fights out of New Jersey, figured she had a shot to make the card.Im pretty lucky to be on this card, considering this is only my second UFC fight, Chookagian said. But I also had a feeling Id be on the card. Im pretty much the only girl signed in either diviision who is from the East Coast, New York area. Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Discount. I was holding on to that, thinking maybe it would get me on here.In addition to her locale, Chookagian is also one of the better prospects in female MMA. She started taekwondo when she was 4, and got into karate a few years later. By the time she was 15, she had already won an amateur Golden Gloves boxing tournament. She trains her striking under standup coach Mark Henry, who will be in the corners of Eddie Alvarez and Frankie Edgar on Nov. 12.Currently, I think the womens side of the sport is where the men were a few years ago, Chookagian said. I feel like most of the women are only dominant in one area of MMA. Thats why youve seen, in the bantamweight division, there has been a different champion every fight lately. A lot of that has to do with matchups.I think I represent the newer generation. I have equal experience in different areas of fighting.Statistical comparisonCarmouche: 10-5 record (2-3 in UFC); past three fights have gone to decision (1-2 record)Carmouche: 11 takedowns landed in past four fightsChookagian: 8-0 record (1-0 in UFC); five of eight wins by decisionChookagian: Defended three of four takedowns in UFC debut (UD3 over Lauren Murphy)BreakdownThis bout sets up as a potential passing of the torch for contender status within the division -- unless its just too early for Chookagian.Carmouche will battle a size disadvantage, which could make things especially difficult as grappling is her clearest path to victory. Chookagian is a mobile, high-paced striker with a jab that is pretty efficient at maintaining the distance she wants. What Carmouche lacks in size at this weight, she makes up for in strength. Chookagian also doesnt carry a lot of knockout power, which means theres a solid chance Carmouche will get a full 15 minutes to work her takedowns. If you look over Carmouches record, her toughest foes mostly have been bigger grapplers. Chookagian is definitely bigger, but her grappling is less proven.PREDICTION: Chookagian by decision. ' ' '

    • Colorado?has hired Jared Bednar, former coach of the American Hockey League champion Lake Erie Monsters, to replace Patrick Roy as coach of the Avalanche, the team announced Thursday. Mike Haynes Jersey .Bednar, who has no NHL playing or coaching experience, signed a three-year contract with the Avalanche.Roy, the Hall of Fame goaltender, abruptly quit as Avalanche coach and vice president of hockey operations two weeks ago, sending the team on a late-summer quest to fill the vacancy. Roy cited a disconnect between himself and management over his roles.Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic called Bednar one of the top up-and-coming coaches in our business and said he fit the profile he wanted after going through the interview process. We knew we were in a rush situation, but I wanted to do what I thought was the best thing for the franchise, Sakic said on a conference call Thursday. I look at the track record, and I place a lot of value in winning championships. I know Jareds won in the [ECHL], and he just won a Calder Cup. Its tough to win in any league, and to be able to win, youve got to be doing something right.Sakic called Bednar a demanding coach whom players respect and play for. He never played in the NHL, paying his dues as a journeyman minor league defenseman in his playing days, before coaching at the minor pro level since 2002. The Lake Monsters are the top farm team of the?Columbus Blue Jackets. It hasnt been an overnight thing, Bednar said. Its taken some time, and I think that all my stops along the way have helped prepare me for this. Ive never been trying to get on a fast track to get to the NHL. I feel like the goal is to do a good job where you are and be consistent and hone your craft, and thats what Ive been working on over the years.Bednar got the nod from Sakic over Washington Capitals assistant Lane Lambert, Chicago Blackhawks assistant and former Florida Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen and others. Sakics playing experience winning two Stanley Cups under Marc Crawford and Bob Hartley helped him decide that NHL head-coaching experience wasnt a must.Last season was just Bednars fourth as a coach at the AHL level. The native of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, was an assistant in the AHL for three other seasons.?He also won the East Coast Hockey Leagues Kelly Cup in 2009 with the South Carolina Stingrays.Sakic said he wanted someone who could coach in the fast, modern NHL and work with young players. Bednar showed he could do that in the Blue Jackets organization, impressing John Tortorella early in his tenure with the big club.Tortorella told me, I dont know who [Bednar] is, but every time he sends me a guy, hes ready to play, said Blue Jackets assistant GM Bill Zito. I remembered it when he said it, and I never forgot it.The Associated Press contributed to this report. Steve Young Jersey .C. at the helm of the top team in the Eastern Conference. He ended the opening round of the PGA Championship by having to gouge out of deep rough. It was the golf in between that was some of the best he has ever played, even for an Australian with a green jacket. Showing that hes not satisfied as only being a Masters champion, Scott ran off five straight birdies early in his round Thursday on soft and vulnerable Oak Hill, and a 15-foot par putt at the end gave him a 5-under 65 and a share of the lead with Jim Furyk. "Probably the best run Ive ever had," Scott said of his five straight birdies. "I just hit really nice shots and didnt leave myself too much work. You have to take advantage of that if youre feeling that. It was a dream start after kind of a nervous first couple of holes." David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., an alternate until a week ago, had a 66 in the morning. Also at 66 was Lee Westwood, who had his best score ever in the PGA and offered evidence that there was no hangover from losing a 54-hole lead in the British Open last month. It felt like an easy start to so many others. Oak Hill has such a strong reputation that it has yielded only 10 scores under par over 72 holes in five previous major championships. The last time the PGA Championship was held on this Donald Ross design in 2003, there were only 12 rounds under par on the first day. But with overnight rain, humid conditions and a 71-minute delay for storms in the afternoon, Thursday might be as easy as it gets. Scott and Furyk had plenty of company, two of 35 players who broke par. Tiger Woods was not among them. The worlds No. 1 player made only two birdies despite playing in the still of the morning, and he watched his round fall apart with a bogey on par-5 fourth and a double bogey on his final hole when his flop shot out of a deep rough floated into a bunker. Woods had a 71, not a bad start at Oak Hill, except on this day. "The round realistically could have been under par easily," Woods said. Furyk, who won his lone major at the U.S. Open in 2003 at Olympia Fields, has gone nearly three years since his last win at the Tour Championship to capture the FedEx Cup and win PGA Tour player of the year. Still fresh are the four close calls from a year ago, including the U.S. Open. He was as steady as Scott, rarely putting himself in trouble until the end of the round. Furyk missed the fairway to the right and had to pitch out because of thick rough and trees blocking his way to the green. That led to his only bogey, but still his lowest first-round score in 19 appearances at the PGA Championship. "Usually disappointed with ending the day on a bogey," Furyk said. "But you know, 65, PGA, is not so bad." There were no record scores at Oak Hill despite the soft conditions, just a lot of low rounds. "If you dont hit it in the fairways, then you wont score well," Westwood said. "These guys are good. There are a lot of good players playing in the tournament. Somebody is going to hit it straight, and somebody is going to shoot a good scoree. Scott Bull Jersey. " Scott certainly didnt start out that way. He had to pitch out from the trees on No. 1, but managed to get up-and-down from about 85 yards in front of the green, and after two more pars, he began his big run of birdies. "Just got on a bit of a roll and hit a few shots close," Scott said. "I didnt have too much putting to do. Youve got to take advantage when it happens, because it doesnt happen too much in the majors. Nothing to complain about in 65." He felt similar to the opening round at Royal Lytham & St. Annes last year in the British Open, when he flirted with a 63 and had to settle for a course record-tying 64. Scott was on pace to tie the Oak Hill record for majors when he birdied the 14th, but he three-putted two holes later for bogey and was pleased to walk away with par on the 18th. "I felt good out there today," he said. "I felt like I could swing freely and I was hitting all the shots that I wanted to hit. When you get something going for you in a major, sometimes you have got to be not afraid to get out of your own way and let go. I did that at Lytham, and I did that here for 10 or 11 holes." Just last month at Muirfield, the 31-year-old Australian had the outright lead on the back nine in the British Open until he made four straight bogeys and couldnt keep up with Phil Mickelson and his great finish. Even so, it was evident that Scott was serious about adding more majors to that green jacket he won at Augusta National in April. "I put a lot into my game the last two years with a focus on the big tournaments," Scott said. "Everyone around me has had the same focus, as well. We come here to do business." Even Rory McIlroy got in on the act. The defending champion, at the end of a major season that has been a major disappointment, came out firing with three birdies on the opening four holes and made the turn in 32 until back-to-back bogeys. He wound up with a 69. A resurgent Paul Casey was in the group at 67, while U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, British Open runner-up Henrik Stenson and the ageless Miguel Angel Jimenez were among 11 players at 68. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., had an even par 70. Mickelson wound up with the same score as Woods, only they arrived at 71 much differently. Woods had only two birdies. Mickelson shot 71 despite two double bogeys, including one on the 18th hole. On the par-5 fourth hole, he hooked his tee shot out-of-bounds and nearly lost the next tee shot in the same place. "The first four holes was like a shock to my system," Mickelson said. "Hitting it out-of-bounds on 4 ... out-of-bounds is not even in play. So I got off to a terrible start. I was actually under par for a little while, but that took a lot of fight. And unfortunately, Im in a position where if I hit a low round tomorrow, I can get back in it." He headed straight to the practice range, even summoning coach Butch Harmon down from the Sky Sports television booth. Asked when he finished his work if he was worried about his game, Mickelson replied, "Not now. I was." ' ' '

Here are his mid-season NBA awards.  MVP: (KEVIN DURANT-Thunder) - Has been sensational this season and more importantly, the most consistent player in the league. Considering that his team has been without star guard Russell Westbrook and with the free agent departure of sharpshooter Kevin Martin, hes had to carry the majority of the load to not only keep his team afloat but more importantly, at an elite level. AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn tailback Kamryn Pettway came into the regular season as a converted fullback who had blocked for the ball carriers in college but never actually been one.He ended it contemplating, at least briefly, a jump to the NFL. In between, the 6-foot, 240-pounder emerged as one of the Southeastern Conferences top running backs when healthy and helped propel the 17th-ranked Tigers to the Sugar Bowl Jan. 2 against No. 7 Oklahoma. For him to step up and play running back and really only be healthy or starting running back for eight of those games and be first-team All-SEC, I think that says a lot, Auburn guard Alex Kozan said. It says all that needs to be said. Hes a hell of a player.Pettways emergence boosted a backfield that had lost three tailbacks from last season to the NFL (Peyton Barber), dismissal (Jovon Robinson) or transfer (Roc Thomas). The Tigers didnt miss them much when Pettway was healthy. He missed two of the final three games with an injury to his left quad and didnt even log a carry in the first game.Or all of last season, for that matter.Pettway wound up rushing for 1,123 yards and averaging a league-best 124.8 yards per game. He felt he could be an elite back entering the season, but his college resume consisted of a redshirt year and, statistically, an 8-yard kick return last season.Pettway said his emergence as an elite SEC back wasnt a surprise to him but adds: I surprised a lot of other people.I believed deep down in my mind that I could, but I mean, everybody else hadnt had a chance to see it, he said. I just felt like I needed an opportunity to show it.The season put Pettway on the radar of some NFL teams as a potential draft pick, buut he announced on social media that he planned to return for his fourth season to complete some unfinished business. The married father of 1-year-old daughter Kaisley talked about the decision with his parents and wife Natonya, whom he met as a freshman at Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. That unfinished business includes graduating and presumably proving hes not a one-year wonder. Its my degree for one, but I want to have a good, healthy season, Pettway said. A full, complete season. He returned to action in the regular-season finale against No. 1 Alabama but was held to 17 yards by the nations top defense.Pettway, who was injured at the end of a long run against Vanderbilt , said he was about 90 percent healthy for that game. Now, he and quarterback Sean White (shoulder) are both back and apparently recovered for the Sugar Bowl.Pettway played a starring role in Auburns six-game winning streak that propelled the Tigers into SEC Western Division contention. During the final four games of that stretch, he averaged 30 carries and 192 yards. Now, hes back in the backfield with White and 862-yard rusher Kerryon Johnson, who was also slowed by an ankle injury late in the season.Theyll face a big challenge in the Sooners, who are riding a nine-game winning streak. A healthy backfield certainly helps Auburns chances. It feels great being healthy, Pettway said. Im 100 percent now. I can run full speed, so Im just ready for the bowl game.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
